High potential and gifted education
Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.
High Potential and Gifted Education at Currans Hill Public School
At Currans Hill Public School, we believe that every child has unique strengths, talents, and abilities waiting to be discovered and nurtured. Our High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) approach ensures that all students are challenged, supported, and inspired to achieve their personal best across the intellectual, creative, social–emotional, and physical domains.

What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
At Currans Hill Public School, high potential is nurtured in every classroom through inclusive, evidence-based teaching practices that support growth across all domains.
- Early identification of potential using teacher observations, formative and summative assessment data, and family input to identify students who would benefit from enrichment or extension.
- Differentiated learning tasks designed with varying levels of complexity, enabling students to work at their level of challenge and readiness.
- Flexible grouping practices, including individual, pair, and group work based on learning needs, interests, or abilities.
- Use of formative assessment tools, such as diagnostic assessments, observation checklists, and student self-assessments, to inform responsive planning and differentiation.
- High expectations embedded in lesson planning, with learning objectives that promote higher-order thinking, creativity, and problem-solving.
- Student voice and agency, with students setting goals, reflecting on progress, and taking leadership roles in learning activities.
- Wellbeing and belonging embedded as essential conditions for growth, ensuring students feel supported, confident, and safe to take intellectual risks.
Beyond the classroom, we provide structured and flexible opportunities to further develop students’ strengths and talents.
- Extension and enrichment programs in key learning areas, supported by strong school and community partnerships.
- Inquiry-based and project-based learning opportunities that extend thinking and deepen understanding.
- Creative arts programs, including visual arts, dance, drama, and music, with opportunities for performances, exhibitions, and workshops.
- Environmental and interest-based programs such as Garden Club and Chess Group, fostering curiosity, responsibility, and collaboration.
- Leadership and mentoring structures, including Buddy Reading, an active Student Representative Council (SRC), and a Junior Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG).
- Ongoing monitoring and review of student progress to ensure support remains responsive and success is recognised and celebrated.
Students are supported to access broader enrichment and extension opportunities beyond the school.
- Participation in network and system-led HPGE enrichment days.
- Involvement in academic competitions and events, including debating and public speaking.
- Opportunities to engage in representative sporting pathways through PSSA and regional competitions.
- Access to external programs, incursions, and partnerships with educational and community organisations that provide authentic, real-world learning experiences.
